Bianca Andreescu Undergoes Emergency Surgery, Eyes Clay-Court Comeback
2019 US Open champion Bianca Andreescu (@Bandreescu_) is on the road to recovery after undergoing an emergency appendectomy. The sudden surgery has ruled her out of the Merida Open in Mexico later this month, delaying the start of her 2025 season.
Andreescu, known for her creative and versatile play, has battled multiple injuries in recent years. She hasn’t competed since reaching the Tokyo quarterfinals last October, where she fell to Katie Boulter (@katiecboulter) 6-2, 6-1. Ranked #130, the Canadian now plans to return to action in the spring for the clay-court season.
“Training was going so well, and I was very excited for the Merida Open to be my first tournament of the 2025 season,” Andreescu shared on social media. “However, I unexpectedly started experiencing sharp stomach pains, which led to an emergency appendectomy. The surgery went smoothly, and I’m on the road to recovery. My plan is to be back on the court for the clay season stronger than ever. Thanks so much for all your support—can’t wait to compete!”
The Merida Open (@MeridaOpenWT) is set for February 24–March 2, but Andreescu will be missing from the draw.
Last season, Andreescu reached the ‘s-Hertogenbosch final on grass, pushing Liudmila Samsonova (@liudmilasamo) to three sets before falling 6-4, 3-6, 5-7. She later snapped a five-match losing streak with her Tokyo quarterfinal run, marking her last competitive appearance.
Now, the focus shifts to her recovery and a strong return on clay. Fans will be eagerly awaiting her comeback in the months ahead.
