United Cup: Ruthless Iga Swiatek clinches dominant wins in singles, mixed doubles

World No. 1 Iga Swiatek was absolutely brilliant on the court today as the Pole clinched dominant wins in singles and mixed doubles to help her nation get a win over Spain at the United Cup.

After Hubert Hurkacz lost to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the opening match of the tie, Swiatek entered the Sara Sorribes Tormo match in a must-win situation. But being in a must-win situation wasn’t an issue for Swiatek, who demolished world No. 53 Sorribes Tormo 6-2 6-1.

After beating Sorribes Tormo to force a deciding match, Swiatek teamed up with Hurkacz for mixed doubles. In the deciding mixed doubles match, Swiatek delivered another great performance as she and Hurkacz destroyed Sorribes Tormo and Davidovich Fokina 6-0 6-0.

Following wins over Brazil and Spain, Poland won Group A in Perth and clinched a quarterfinal spot at the United Cup.

How Swiatek won her singles, mixed doubles matches?

Against Sorribes Tormo, Swiatek had to save some break points early as the Pole saved two break points in the third game and two more in the fifth game. After saving four break points, Swiatek claimed back-to-back breaks in the sixth and eighth games to win the first set.

After losing five consecutive games, Sorribes Tormo managed to finally get one game after saving four break points in the second game to tie the second set to one game apiece. However, missing out on four break points in the second game didn’t impact Swiatek at all, who went on to earn back-to-back breaks fourth and sixth games and win five games in a row to complete a dominant two-set win.

After losing a total of three games in her singles match, Swiatek was even more dominant with Hurkacz in their mixed doubles match as they double-bageled Sorribes Tormo and Davidovich Fokina.

In the first set, Swiatek and Hurkacz claimed three breaks and didn’t face a single break point. The same scenario was seen in the second set as Swiatek and Hurkacz collected three breaks and didn’t allow Sorribes Tormo and Davidovich Fokina a single break point chance.
