US Open: Ons Jabeur gets past Camila Osorio’s valiance in a strenous opener!

Ons Jabeur battled against more than one opponent to get through to the second round of the US Open on Tuesday. The Tunisian, who reached the finals in Flushing Meadows in 2022, defeated Camila Osorio 7-5, 7-6(4) in a match that was slightly longer than two hours. However, the fifth seed also was acutely sick and had to call for medical assistance in the match.

At the start of the match, it didnā€™t long for Jabeur to take control of the match and she soon built a 4-1 lead over the Colombian. But as the set progressed, even as the Colombian began to settle into the proceedings, Jabeurā€™s health started to become a cause of concern. The 29-year-old kept coughing and even had to have her blood pressure checked. She did continue with the match but the easy shot-making thatā€™d come to be Jabeurā€™s game wasnā€™t to be found after that for the rest of the match, thereafter. Towards the business end of the first set, Jabeur did collect a third break on Osorioā€™s serve in the 11th game, en route to serving it out.

In the second set, Jabeur did serve for the match in the 12th game but was broken on the second break point Osorio generated in that game. In the tie-break, Jabeur went on to convert the first of the two match points she brought up.

Jabeur finished the match with 25 winners to her opponentā€™s 14 and also had four more unforced errors than the latterā€™s tally of 39.

US Open: Battling knee injury, Venus Williams endures a tame loss

In the second round, Linda Noskova will be Jabeurā€™s opponent. The Czech was the first player to reach the second round on Tuesday in New York City. The 18-year-old needed only 52 minutes to oust local player, Madison Brengle 6-2, 6-1 in their first-round match-up.

Another American, twice past US Open champion, Venus Williamsā€™ journey in this yearā€™s edition of the Major also ended in the first round. After an hour and 14 minutes, Belgiumā€™s Greet Minnen defeated the 43-year-old veteran, 6-1, 6-1.

Lastly, seventh seed Caroline Garcia joined eighth seed Maria Sakkari in being upset in the first round at the US Open. Chinese qualifier Yafan Wang posted a 6-4, 6-1 win over the Frenchwoman after 70 minutes of play. This is the third time in her career Wangā€™s reached the second round in the Major and itā€™s the first time in almost five years (since 2018) sheā€™s done so. Meanwhile, Garcia had reached the semis here, the previous year.
