At the WTA 1000 in Montreal, the super challenge on Canadian hard courts between Iga Swiatek and Karolina Muchova, the two finalists of this latest edition of Roland Garros, is re-proposed. A match that follows precise rules: first set to the Polish, second set to the Czech, third again to the French Open champion.
Even in Canada, the same thing happens. The difference, however, was the rain. The game stopped at the end of the second set, when the Paris finalist was showing her best tennis, while the world number one was struggling a lot: a lot of fouls and difficulty on her serve, two aspects that gave her opponent three set points on her service, do not fail.
She returns for the third set, where the number one immediately wins the break. That is enough for the entire set for Swiatek to win the round of 16 match: 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 is the result that takes her to the quarterfinals.
Iga Swiatek beats Karolina Muchova also in Montreal
Elena Rybakina also wins, beating Sloane Stephens in straight sets. A double 6-3 for the Slam champion, who has risen in level compared to the previous Canadian hard-court match and thus wins the quarterfinals: here she will face Daria Kasatkina, who beat Bouzkova with a 6-3, 6-4.
In Canada, the great race of US tennis players also continues. Games with the victory of Jessica Pegula against Jennifer Paolini, followed by the victory of Coco Gauff against the Wimbledon winner Marketa Vondrousova: 6-3, 6-0 without history for the young talent of the women’s circuit. Now, in the quarterfinals, it will be a challenge between countrywomen and doubles partners.
To sign a great victory and a great journey at the Canadian WTA 1000 is Danielle Collins. The American defeated the home player Leyhla Fernandez in the round of 16 with the result of 6-2, 6-3.
There is still a quarter to be decided, postponed due to the rain: Aryna Sabalenka will battle against Samsonova and Petra Kvitova against Belinada Bencic.
