Cori Gauff, 19, thinks she is on “the pathway” to landing her first Grand Slam title.
Gauff, ranked at No 7 in the world, burst onto the scene exactly four years ago when she upset Venus Williams and made the Wimbledon round-of-16 as a 15-year-old qualifier.
Four years later, Gauff is a Grand Slam finalist and has been ranked as high as No 4 in the world.
But Gauff is aiming for greater heights as it is not a secret that she wants to be a Grand Slam champion and ranked at No 1 in the world.
Going into this year’s Wimbledon, Gauff hopes The All England Club can be the place where she will fulfill her dream of becoming a Slam champion.
Gauff: I’m on the pathway to getting a Slam
“That would be the greatest thing. I don’t know how my career will pan out but I do think I’m giving myself the best opportunity and the best chance with the day-by-day work that I’m doing and that’s all I can control. Obviously, when I get on the court I will try my best but I definitely feel like I’m on the pathway to getting one soon,” Gauff told Sky Sports.
Now that Gauff is a top-10 player and has been to a Grand Slam final, she admits there is more pressure and expectations on her shoulders.
But Gauff is trying to navigate her way through everything and achieve success on the court.
“I am trying to be more aggressive and I think I feel a little bit more pressure now. The more established you become, the more people expect from you, so sometimes I do try to take myself back to that mindset I had when I was 15. It’s really about balance. You have to know you’re going to do well but don’t expect too much where you, I guess, crumble under the pressure,” Gauff said.
