At the Mutua Madrid Open 2023, Aryna Sabalenka takes revenge on the final in Stuttgart, which took place two weeks ago, and beats Iga Swiatek in the final with the result of 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. The world number two conquers the second WTA 1000 title of her career (since there is the new name WTA 1000-ed.) Her first was the Mutua Madrid Open, won two years ago.
Both aggressive from the first exchanges, Sabalenka however seems from the first exchanges more centered than her opponent, who in her first service games does not find her first and above all misses too much on the forehand side.
Despite this, in the sixth game, down 40-15, Swiatek manages to recover the disadvantage and reach 3-3, not without difficulty. In the eighth game, the Polish tennis player falls back: again down 40-15, she finds herself having to defend two break points.
She did well in the first, thanks to a backhand error by the Belarusian, but in the second she conceded the break, which had already been in the air for a while. An ace and a perfect backhand close the first set in favor of Sabalenka.
Swiatek takes the break at the first opportunity. Unlike her opponent, however, Sabalenka doesn’t fit: Swiatek slows down, she accelerates.
Thus, in the fifth game, the number two in the world recovers the break, at the fourth break point granted by a Swiatek who fears the backhand of the Australian Open champion. She is the latter the player more in the game of the two and the umpteenth break points conquered in the seventh game prove it, but Swiatek still survives.
But the number one in the world counts on her game, her position in her ranking and she manages to break serve again, getting the chance to serve for the set and she’s not wrong. In the third set, the game of the initial round of deceptive service returns. Swiatek is surprised again by Sabalenka who makes little or no mistakes and the break is served.
The two tennis players demonstrate that they are deservedly number one and two in the world, in a waltz of break and counterbreak. The last advantage is signed by Aryna Sabalenka, after having also failed match point, who thus takes home the Madrid title for the second time.
On Saturday, the men’s doubles final and two of the tennis players who are also protagonists of the singles draw triumph. The made in Russia duo made up of Andrey Rublev and Karen Khachanov wins the title by beating Bopanna/Ebden in three sets in the final: 6-3, 3-6, 10-3 is the final result.
