Paula Badosa, Spanish tennis player formerx number 2 of the WTA ranking, after a difficult period in terms of results, tried to regain confidence at the WTA in Charleston.
On the green clay-courts, the Spaniard was defeated by Jessica Pegula in straight sets, after a very close challenge.
Before taking the court, Paula attended, together with the other tennis players, the gala ceremony that anticipates the start of the event. For the occasion, she wore a gray top and black pants: an achievement that delighted her followers on Instagram.
Badosa on the Trash Talk
Badosa, after the victory against Leylah Fernandez in Charleston, said “It was a very intense match. She started in an extraordinary way. At first I thought: is it me or is she playing very well? Leylah was giving it, she served well and IĀ had to adjust very quickly because the result flowed very fast.
So I’m very happy that I was able to neutralize that level and win. I started the second set playing very well. But I didn’t take advantage of the opportunities I had on break points and she played spectacularly, so I acknowledge that.
I think it was a good match from both sides and I’m happy with the win. The conditions were a bit similar to those of the first game. It was very wet and it was difficult because it’s difficult to move to defend. I heard it like yesterday. It was very hot, but I’m getting used to it and I like it.”
On trash-talk she said: “On the track I always talk about trash-talk! Now, seriously, I think it can be a little different when you’re not used to it.
Traditionally tennis is very polite, but why not? It’s a new generation and it could be a change, it could be different and it could be fun. But I don’t know how a woman would take it, perhaps more personally.
But in the men’s field I see it. I like watching tennis and I like watching women’s tennis. I think they get better every year and I learn from them too. I always think big.
I too would like to have a good year and be back in the top 10, but I think it is far away at the moment and I want to go day by day and work hard every day. And I believe that if I regain my self-confidence, the results will come because the level is there.”
