Novak Djokovic has set his sights on his third Roland Garros title and is ready to take on rivals Rafael Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz in the upcoming clay Major tournament in June. As a seasoned player, Djokovic has been focused on major events for years, having achieved everything else and aiming to finish his career with more notable titles than anyone else. The Serb claimed his second Roland Garros crown in 2021, staging a remarkable comeback against Stefanos Tsitsipas in the final.
However, Djokovic’s run at Roland Garros last year was cut short by Rafael Nadal, who defeated him in the quarter-final following a four-hour and 12-minute battle. Despite the cold, heavy, and slow conditions, Nadal produced his A-game and defeated Djokovic in a memorable marathon. Although Novak recovered in the second set and threw everything he had at Rafa in the fourth, the Spaniard made the difference with his second serve, keeping it safe and overpowering Djokovic in the pivotal moments.
Nadal saved eight out of 12 break chances and turned 43% of the return points into seven breaks from 17 opportunities. He also dictated the pace with 57 winners and 43 unforced errors, leaving the Serb on a 48-53 ratio. Unlike 12 months ago, Rafa had a massive advantage in the shortest range up to four strokes, overpowering Djokovic in the most extended exchanges to seal the deal in four sets and preserve some energy for the semi-final clash with Alexander Zverev.
Djokovic is now looking forward to seeking his third Roland Garros crown in June and playing his best tennis on the court. “Things are different from ten years ago regarding that vital energy. I do not even have to be in a lot of tournaments anymore where I participate intensively, like some of the younger guys are doing now. I choose where I participate and where I want to be in top form. Majors top the list, and Roland Garros comes next. It’s no secret; I want to play my best tennis there,” Djokovic said.
With his eyes on the prize, Djokovic will aim to outdo his competitors and claim his 23rd notable title at Roland Garros. As one of the greatest tennis players of all time, Djokovic will be eager to showcase his skills on the clay court and cement his place in the history books. Tennis fans can’t wait to see how Djokovic performs and whether he can take down Nadal and Alcaraz to claim his third Roland Garros crown.
