Jannik Sinner joins Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic in withdrawing from Madrid

World No 8 Jannik Sinner has joined Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic in withdrawing from the Madrid Masters.

Sinner, 21, won’t be making his third Madrid appearance this year.

Sinner made his Madrid debut in 2021, when he was beaten by Alexei Popyrin in the second round.

Last year, Sinner reached the Madrid round-of-16 before losing to Felix Auger-Aliassime.

Last week, Sinner competed at the Barcelona Open.

In Barcelona, Sinner won his first two matches to set up a quarterfinal against Lorenzo Musetti.

Due to illness, Sinner pulled out of the match.

“I’m sad to withdraw from today’s match in Barcelona. I have been feeling unwell for a few days now. Today the sickness got worse, and I’m not able to play. I will take some time to rest and recover. Thanks for all your support, and good luck to Lorenzo for the rest of the event,” Sinner said in his statement.

Sinner joins Nadal, Djokovic in withdrawing from Madrid

On Thursday, Nadal announced he would not be able to make his long-awaited comeback in Madrid.

After missing the Monte Carlo Masters and Barcelona, Nadal was also forced to withdraw from Madrid.

“I will not be able to be in Madrid unfortunately. The injury still hasn’t healed and I can’t work out what I need to to compete. I was training, but now a few days ago we decided to change course a bit, do another treatment and see if things improve to try to get to what comes next. I can’t give deadlines because if I knew I would tell you but I don’t know,” Nadal said.

On Saturday, Djokovic also pulled out of Madrid.

The Madrid organizers suffered two major blows when Nadal and Djokovic decided to skip the tournament.

Sinner, Nadal and Djokovic could all return to action at the Rome Masters.
