Emma Raducanu to meet fellow Grand Slam champion in Stuttgart opener

Emma Raducanu has been handed a tricky opener in Stuttgart as the 2021 US Open champion is set to play 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko.

Raducanu, ranked at No 68 in the world, received a main draw wildcard into a WTA 500 event in Stuttgart.

When Raducanu and world No 22 Ostapenko clash against each other, it will be their second meeting.

In late 2022, Raducanu and Ostapenko met in the Seoul semifinal.

Back then, Ostapenko had a 4-6 6-3 3-0 lead when Raducanu was forced to retire injured.

If Raducanu beats Ostapenko, she will meet third-seeded Ons Jabeur in the Stuttgart round-of-16.

Raducanu excited about competing in a strong Stuttgart player field

Last year, Raducanu made her debut on the clay courts of Stuttgart.

“Very much so! I had a great experience last year and played well, itā€™s a fun tournament and very well run so Iā€™m really looking forward to returning to Stuttgart,” Raducanu told Porsche-Tennis.

The Stuttgart event features several top-10 players, including Jabeur, Iga Swiatek, Aryna Sabalenka and Caroline Garcia.

Last year, Raducanu reached the Stuttgart quarterfinal before losing to Swiatek.

Just a couple of days ago, Raducanu said she was excited about competing in a strong Stuttgart player field.

“The tournament always attracts the worldā€™s top players. The strong field means thereā€™s some great tennis to be seen and good competition. Personally, I like to test myself and compete with the best players in the world, so itā€™s a challenge I enjoy,” Raducanu said.

Raducanu now has a bit more experience on clay and she is hoping it will help her do well in Stuttgart.

“I havenā€™t played on clay since the last clay court season but Iā€™m looking forward to it again. Iā€™ve already had my first practice sessions. Last year was my first real experience on clay and I was pleased with my progress so it will be fun getting back playing on clay,” Raducanu said.
