Two-time French Open finalist Dominic Thiem has lauded Ben Shelton’s potential for a top-10 ranking ahead of their first-ever meeting in the Estoril second round.
The young American player, currently at a career-high No. 39 in the world, secured his first ATP clay win with a straight-sets victory over Constant Lestienne in the first round.
Thiem praised Shelton’s athleticism and serve, but intends to leverage his own clay-court experience to advance. Thiem also noted that he’s been playing better than his record shows, and hopes that his victory over Sebastian Ofner will mark the beginning of a turnaround in his 2023 season.
The upcoming match between Thiem and Shelton promises to be a fascinating clash between a veteran and an up-and-coming player with plenty of promise.
āIām actually playing much better than in the second half of 2022 when I was winning matches. My ball is heavier, I can hurt opponents. Just some things arenāt clicking as I want. I hope this win (and week) is the start of something,” Thiem said.
