Miami Open: Carlos Alcaraz, Taylor Fritz and the day-5 Highlights

The day-5 at the Miami Open 2023 held no particular surprises. Jannik Sinner reaches the round of 16 at the ATP Masters 1000 in Miami. Minimum objective, one might say, given the draw. The 2021 edition finalist gets rid of Grigor Dimitrov without particular difficulties.

Even if the Bulgarian tennis player definitely raises the engine speed in the heart of the second set. The blue talent, who needless to say, however, recovered a break from disadvantage on two occasions, despite a decidedly fluctuating performance with the serve available, he closed on 6-3 6-4 after just over ninety minutes of play and went on a collision course with Andrey Rublev.

The balance in the direct clashes is perfectly equal (on 2-2), with the Russian who curiously has always won thanks to his opponent’s forfeit. In Vienna in 2020 and in Paris in 2022. After about sixty minutes of domination, the world number one Carlos Alcaraz needs something more to overcome Dusan Lajovic.

The Spaniard did not take advantage of a 6-0 5-3 advantage, but still took refuge with rather positive results in the decisive game and above all avoided extending a game that was essentially already over. Daniil Medvedev also goes through the round without playing thanks to Alex Molcan’s withdrawal.

No problem for Taylor Fritz, who put an end to Denis Shapovalov’s march with a clear 6-4 6-2. A rather similar speech for Diego Schwartzman, who slams into the wall raised by Holger Rune, without actually ever giving the chance to make the game even.

Below the day-5 highlights

The women’s results

In the women’s draw, Bianca Andreescu continues to win, who after Emma Raducanu and Maria Sakkari also beats Sofia Kenin with a double 6-4. Moreover, the Canadian hadn’t won at least three matches in the same tournament on the WTA TourĀ for about ten months.

Waiting for her, Ekaterina Alexandrova. Belinda Bencic’s misstep against the Russian tennis player should be recorded. In the final part of the day, no surprises with Aryna Sabalenka who closed the curtain thanks to a clear 6-1 6-2 against Bouzkova.
