The Russian ousted former junior US Open winner Yibing Wu 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 in an hour and 55 minutes to move into the last 32 and set Nick Kyrgios clash. Medvedev fired 12 aces and made the difference with his first serve. He saved eight out of nine break points and kept the pressure on the youngster. Wu dropped half of the points behind the initial shot and got broken six times from 12 opportunities offered to the Russian to end his run in the third round. Bot players served well in the opening four games, and Yibing fended off a break chance at 2-2 to remain on the positive side.

The Russian earned another break in game three and held at love in the next one to forge a 4-0 advantage. Medvedev saved break points in game six and served for the set at 5-2. The Russian grabbed an early break in the third set and forced the rival’s backhand mistake to forge a 4-1 lead. Medvedev moved 5-1 in front with a service winner, and Wu served to stay in the match in game eight. The Chinese held at 15 to prolong the duel before the Russian sealed the deal with a service winner in game eight.
