Angelique Kerber announces pregnancy, out of US Open

Angelique Kerber has announced that she is expecting her first child and she is out of the US Open.

On Wednesday, German media Bild reported that Kerber was pregnant and out of the US Open.

A few hours later, Kerber took to Twitter, where she confirmed the reports.

Kerber is a three-time Grand Slam champion and one of her three Grand Slams have come at the US Open.

In 2016, Kerber defeated Karolina Pliskova in the US Open final.

Kerber admitted that withdrawing from the US Open wasn’t easy, but added it’s probably the right decision considering the circumstances.

Kerber: Two against one just isn’t a fair competition.

ā€œI really wanted to play the US Open but eventually I decided that two against one just isnā€™t a fair competition,ā€ Kerber wrote on Twitter. ā€œFor the next months, I will take a break from travelling the globe as a tennis player but then again, I believe itā€™s for the best possible reason I will miss all of you. New York has often been a turning point in my career and it feels like this year will be no different in some way! From restarting my career in 2011 to winning the title in 2016 and becoming number one in the world. The US Open has a special place in my heart and I wish I could have said goodbye to all of you on court before not being around on tour for a while. Being a professional athlete means everything to me but Iā€™m grateful for the new path Iā€™m heading to. To be honest, Iā€™m nervous and excited at the same time. Thanks for your continued support ā€“ it means everything to me.ā€

Kerber last played at Wimbledon, where she reached the third round before losing to Elise Mertens.

This season, Kerber won one title.

The week before the French Open, Kerber won Strasbourg after beating Kaja Juvan in the final.
