Leylah Fernandez admitted that she didn’t pay too much attention to her foot injury at first and was absolutely heartbroken after receiving the scan results. The Canadian tennis player’s last tournament was the Roland Garros, where she reached the quarter-finals before being beaten by Martina Trevisan in three sets.
Although Fernandez was clearly hampered by a foot injury against the Italian, she refused to retire. After the game, exams revealed a Grade 3 stress fracture. She explained: “I felt a pinch in my third round match and didn’t think about it.
I thought it was a small scratch on my foot, but then, as the week went on, the situation got worse. In my last match, and also the day before, it wasn’t that great. We were hoping it was good for the quarter-finals, but it didn’t go well. It was a sharp pain. At first it was a pinch and then later it was a sharp pain. It was difficult to put my foot down and walk normally.”
Fernandez: “Skipping Wimbledon broke my heart”
After receiving the CT scan results, Leylah Fernandez realized she couldn’t compete at Wimbledon. The Canadian tennis player said:Ā “It was hard. The first few days I was heartbroken.
I was hoping that it was just a sprain or that a nerve had pinched or that a muscle in my foot had something wrong and that it was only a few weeks, but a stress fracture made us waste even more time.Ā I was very heartbroken because I knew I was close to a Grand Slam semi-final and could play against Coco Gauff. It would have been a great match.”
Fortunately, Fernandez is now making good progress from her foot injury and she should be back in action at the WTA 250 in Washington.
The Citi Open will begin on August 1st and the US Open finalist will be one of the star players of the event. Fernandez, 19 year-old, has never participated in Washington and this year she will make her tournament debut.
