Three of the four second-round matches at the Ladies Open Lausanne that were played on Thursday featured players taking on fellow countrywomen. Of these, two matches involved seeded players – the second seed, Belinda Bencic and the sixth seed, Caroline Garcia – both of whom won their respective matches and reached the quarter-finals.
In her match against Susan Bandecchi, the 13th-ranked Bencic won 6-3, 6-4 in an hour and 20 minutes. Bencic won 81% of her first-serve points and 66% of her second-serve points to her fellow Swiss winning 64% of her first-serve and 54% of her second-serve points. She failed to save the lone break point she faced but converted three of the five break points that came her way on Bandecchi’s serve.
In the quarters, Bencic will play Petra Martic.
Ladies Open Lausanne: Jule Niemeier’s good form continues
Garcia defeated Leolia Jeanjean 6-1, 6-4 in an hour and 14 minutes. The higher-ranked Frenchwoman won 72% of her first-serve points to her opponent’s 60% and almost 79% of her second-serve points to the latter’s 42%. Garcia faced no break points throughout the match and secured three breaks on Jeanjean’s serve to clinch the win.
Next up for the world no. 48 is fourth seed Sara Sorribes Tormo.
The last derby of the day featured 2022 Wimbledon quarter-finalist Jule Niemeier against Eva Lys. Niemeier won the encounter 6-4, 6-2 in an hour and 14 minutes. The world no. 109 won 72% of her first-serve points to her rival’s 60%. She also saved four of the five break points she faced while converting all four break points she had on Lys’ serve.
For a chance to reach the semi-finals, Niemeier will next play Anastasia Potapova.
Olga Danilovic won her second-round match against Anna Kalinskaya to reach the quarters of the Ladies Open Lausanne. In what was the longest match of the day at two hours and four minutes, the Serbian clinched a 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 victory. She will next take on Simona Waltert.
