Second seed Daria Kasatkina lost her opening-round match at the Hamburg European Open. The Czech Republic’s Katerina Siniakova ousted the world no. 12, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 in two hours and 34 minutes on Sunday.
Siniakova won 60% of her first-serve points and 44% of her second-serve points to Kasatkina winning 58% and 32% off her first and second serves respectively. The match featured 27 break points with the Czech converting one more break of serve as compared to her opponent’s five.
In the second round, Siniakova will play Brazil’s Laura Pigossi. Pigossi beat Hungarian Reka Luca Jani, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 in their first-round match.
Hamburg European Open: Barbora Krejcikova dominates
Siniakova’s compatriot and doubles partner, Barbora Krejcikova also advanced to the second round. The Czech, seeded third this week, defeated Dutch lucky loser, Suzan Lamens, 6-2, 6-4 in an hour and 23 minutes.
Krejcikova won 80% of her first-serve points and secured four breaks on Lamens’ serve. She also conceded her serve once across the match.
Poland’s Magdalena Frech’s next up for Krejcikova. Frech moved into the second round after her opponent, Anna Kalinskaya retired in their match after losing the first set, 6-1.
In an all-German first-round match-up featuring the eighth-seeded Andrea Petkovic and Tamara Korpatsch, the former came through 6-3, 6-3 in 80 minutes. For a chance to reach the quarter-finals, Petkovic will next play Misaki Doi. Doi ousted qualifier, Oksana Selekhmetova 7-6(10), 6-0 in their opener.
Fourth seed Aliaksandra Sasnovich also took her place in the round-of-16 in Hamburg. Sasnovich won her first-round match against German wildcard, Nastasja Schunk, 6-1, 6-4. The world no. 35 now awaits either Aliaksandra Krunic or another German, qualifier Sabine Lisicki next.
Romanian qualifier Alexandra Cadantu-Ignatik moved into the second round after scoring a 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 win over fellow qualifier, Japan’s Nao Hibino. Cadantu-Ignatik will play seventh seed Maryna Zanevska in the round-of-16. The Belgian won her first-round match on Sunday against Viktoriya Tomova of Bulgaria, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Rebecca Peterson beat Ukrainian lucky loser, Kateryna Baindl in their opening-round encounter. The Swede won 6-3, 6-0 in 78 minutes and will take on either top seed Anett Kontaveit or Irina Bara next.
Argentinian qualifier, Maria Carle set up a second-round meeting against Anastasia Potapova at the Hamburg European Open. Carle beat wildcard Eva Lys of Germany, 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 while Potapova upset the sixth-seeded Varvara Gracheva, 7-5, 6-3 in the first round.
