Australian tennis legend Todd Woodbridge feels this could be the year Nick Kyrgios makes a Grand Slam breakthrough in singles as he feels the 27-year-old has a shot at reaching the latter stages of Wimbledon.
Kyrgios, a six-time ATP champion, kicked off the 2022 season by winning his maiden Grand Slam title.
In the Australian Open doubles final, Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis Matt Ebden and Max Purcell to lift their maiden Grand Slam title.
After winning a Grand Slam title in doubles, Kyrgios will certainly be hoping to win now his first Grand Slam singles title at Wimbledon.
“Nick is actually trained and focused on this season, so this is a good start to the grass-court season. If there is any player in the field outside of Novak that can play well enough and beat everyone on grass, it’s Nick,” Woodbridge told Nine’s Sports Sunday. “So, it’s about, ‘How does he deal with the expectation as he goes into this one this time?’ He is a legitimate force and chance to go deep at Wimbledon.”
Woodbridge: The draw could be the key for Kyrgios
In 2014, Kyrgios introduced himself to the tennis world when he reached the Wimbledon quarterfinal as a teenager.
Eight years later, Kyrgios still has only one Wimbledon quarterfinal appearance but Woodbridge feels that could change this year.
Woodbridge highlighted that a lot will depend on the draw as he is hoping Kyrgios avoid Novak Djokovic in his part of the Wimbledon draw.
“It’ll depend on his draw. That’s significant We don’t want him coming up in a section that Novak might be, which is a possibility. But I think a semi is realistic this year. And if he gets to the semi and his body’s OK and the head’s still on the shoulders, anything can happen,” Woodbridge added.
