New world No. 8 Jessica Pegula withdraws from Eastbourne

World No. 8 Jessica Pegula has withdrawn from Eastbourn and it is likely she won’t play any tournaments leading up to Wimbledon. 

Pegula, 28, won’t be making her second Eastbourne appearance this year. 

In 2019, Pegula debuted on the grass courts of Eastbourne. 

Back then, Pegula won two qualifying matches to earn an Eastbourne main draw place, before losing to Maria Sakkari in the first round. 

The grass season officially kicked off this week but Pegula decided against playing in the opening week of the grass season. 

Pegula won’t compete in any grass tournaments next week and she also won’t play in Eastbourne, which is scheduled to kick off on June 18. 

Pegula taking some time off 

At Roland Garros, Pegula reached her maiden French Open quarterfinal before losing to eventual champion Iga Swiatek. 

In the French Open women’s doubles event, Pegula reached the final with Cori Gauff, before they were beaten by Caroline Garcia and Kristina Mladenovic. 

Following her strong French Open, Pegula broke into the top-10 in singles for the first time in her career. 

While Pegula was at the French Open, she was asked about tournament director Amelie Mauresmo’s comments on women’s tennis. 

Mauresmo suggested the men were getting more night sessions because their matches were more appealing. 

Pegula was it was disappointing to hear Mauresmo making such comments. 

“You know, I don’t know. Yeah, I guess it’s always just – I guess it’s disapppointing. It’s not something you want to hear. I think at the same time we need to have chances to have really good matches to show that it is a good product as well. So, yeah, that’s tough,” Pegula said, per Musab Abid. “But, again, I don’t know. It’s a tricky situation for her because obviously she is trying to do what’s best for the tournament as well. But I think, yeah, of course it’s always a little disappointing to hear that’s her reasoning, being a female, ex-player, you know, Slam champion. But hopefully we can change that.”
