Iga Swiatek beats Serena Williams’ record, ties Venus Williams’ record from 2000

World No. 1 Iga Swiatek has won her 35th consecutive match and beat Serena Williams’ record from 2013.

In 2013, Williams won 34 consecutive matches before losing to Sabine Lisicki at Wimbledon.

Swiatek, who turned 21 this week, defeated Cori Gauff 6-1 6-3 in the French Open final to win her 35th consecutive match and claim her second Grand Slam title.

Swiatek started her run in February, in Doha.

Also, Swiatek has tied Venus Williams’ record from 2000.

In 2000, Venus Williams won 35 consecutive matches.

No WTA player has won more than 35 matches in the 21st century and Swiatek is now a win away from setting a new record for the most wins in the 21st century.

Swiatek on the keys to her success

Swiatek has been absolutely dominant in 2022 and everything seems to be clicking for her.

“Well, I think I have a game to basically, you know, win tournaments, but it’s not only about the game. Like everything has to click, and these tournaments are pretty tough and long. So you can see that Grand Slams have different atmosphere and sometimes the ones that are, you know, the favorites are losing early. So I try to really lower my expectations and just take it step by step,” Swiatek explained. “But, yeah, I feel like this season everything clicked, the work that I have been doing physically, tennis-wise, and mentally, you know. Last season for sure I was doing a lot, but I was still, you know, getting experience. Right now I’m using the experience to get everything, you know, to work properly.”

Swiatek hasn’t lost since mid-February as she went through the Sunshine Double and clay season without a loss.

Swiatek will now take some time to rest and then kick off her preparation for the grass season.
