Karolina Pliskova reached the second round of the Bett1 Open on Monday with a comeback win over Kaia Kanepi. The former world no. 1 completed a 6-7(5), 6-0, 6-0 win over the Estonian in an hour and 43 minutes.
Kanepi had seven break points on the Czech’s serve in the opening set but wasn’t able to convert any of those. And although she prevailed in the tie-break to take a lead in the match, over the course of the latter two sets, she wasn’t able to trouble Pliskova much. On the other hand, her game came apart and she lost her serve six times to concede the match to her opponent.
Bett1 Open: Matches go the distance
Meanwhile, in the round-of-16, the fourth-seeded Pliskova will play Bianca Andreescu. The Canadian came through a three-set tussle of her own against Pliskova’s compatriot, Katerina Siniakova, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in over two hours of play.
Daría Saville also posted a comeback victory of the day in her opening-round match against Jil Teichmann. The Australian won 6-7(2), 7-5, 6-2 against the Swiss in two hours and 42 minutes.
For a place in the quarter-finals, Saville will take on either French qualifier Leolia Jeanjean or the second seed, Maria Sakkari.
Meanwhile, in the all-qualifiers’ first-round clash between Tamara Korpatsch and Xinyu Wang saw the latter claim a 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in two hours and 21 minutes. The Chinese will next play an American in either Ann Li or seventh seed, Coco Gauff.
Aliaksandra Sasnovich beat qualifier Anastasia Gasanova in their first-round clash. Sasnovich needed three sets and two hours and 24 minutes to clinch a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 win.
Lastly, the only other seed to play their round-of-32 match at the Bett1 Open on Monday, the sixth-seeded Daria Kasatkina also advanced to the second round. Kasatkina bounced back after losing the opening set to defeat Anhelina Kalinina, 5-7, 6-3, 6-1 in two hours and 17 minutes. She’ll either play Maryna Zanevska or the Libema Open winner, Ekaterina Alexandrova next.
