Caroline Garcia won the Bad Homburg Open title on Saturday after winning the final against Bianca Andreescu. The Frenchwoman needed two hours and 42 minutes to post a comeback from down a set and a break against the Canadian. Garcia eventually prevailed 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-4.
Andreescu was able to get a purchase on Garcia’s game in the first set and a half despite going down a break early in the first set. Andreescu’s dominance saw her extend her lead to 4-2 in the second set after taking the opener in the tie-break. However, Garcia bounced back into the match at that point and won the last four games of the set to level the match at a set-all.
Garcia won 73% of her first-serve points while Andreescu won 63%. In terms of second-serve points won, Garcia won 58% to Andreescu’s 47%. The match featured eight service breaks — five coming on the former US Open champion’s serve and three coming on Garcia’s. Garcia wrapped up the match with 106 points, 16 more than her opponent’s.
The Bad Homburg Open title is the eighth WTA singles title of Caroline Garcia’s career. This is also the third title she’s won on grass — after the Nottingham Open in 2019 and the Mallorca Open in 2016. This win also ensured that she’s unbeaten in finals played on grass. Garcia will also re-enter the top-60 of the WTA rankings after her title run. Meanwhile, for Bianca Andreescu, the wait to win the fourth title of her career has gotten longer. The 22-year-old was playing her first final since reaching the 2021 Miami Open final in which she’d had to retire (against Ashleigh Barty).
