Angelique Kerber, the defending champion at the Bad Homburg Open won her second-round match on Wednesday to reach the quarter-finals. The German beat Lucia Bronzetti, 6-2, 6-3 in 69 minutes.
Kerber won 78% of her first-serve points to Bronzetti’s 70%. She also won 78% of her second-serve points to the latter’s 32%. The 34-year-old saved all four break points she faced while converting three of the four break points she had on the Italian’s serve.
The former world no. 1 will play ninth seed Alize Cornet looking for a place in the semi-finals. The Frenchwoman defeated Tatjana Maria 7-6(4), 6-4 in their round-of-16 clash.
Bad Homburg Open: Sabine Lisicki’s feel-good story
Another former world no. 1, Simona Halep also reached the quarters of the German event. The Romanian ousted Tamara Zidansek 6-0, 6-3 in 66 minutes. Halep won 91% of her first-serve points and converted five break points on the Slovenian’s serve.
Next up for Halep is sixth seed Amanda Anisimova who routed Ann Li in their second-round match, 6-0, 6-2.
Bianca Andreescu also won her second-round match with a 6-4, 6-4 win over qualifier Katie Swan. Andreescu will get to play the top seed Daria Kasatkina next.
Lastly, Sabine Lisicki’s emotional return continued at the Bad Homburg Open as the German wildcard made it through to the quarters, as well. Lisicki got past Greet Minnen 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 in an hour and 53 minutes. Lisicki will take on Caroline Garcia next.
