Rafael Nadal comments on starting French Open with dominant victory

Record 21-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal was thrilled with the start he made at the French Open as he is hoping to build on from a positive start and play even better as the tournament progresses.

On Monday, Nadal made an easy work of Australia’s Jordan Thompson as he kicked off his French Open campaign with a 6-2 6-2 6-2 victory.

In the first set, Nadal broke Thompson twice and saved one break point to easily win the opener.

After going up by a set, Nadal broke Thompson three times in the second set to open a two-set lead.

Thompson had a 2-1 lead in the third set but Nadal then won five consecutive games to complete a straight-set win.

“It’s a good start. Straight sets, that’s it. It’s a positive start. I’ll have a practice tomorrow and a new chance after tomorrow,” Nadal said, per Tennis Majors.

Nadal: The conditions weren’t easy

It was a rainy Monday in Paris and Nadal acknowledged the playing conditions were far from ideal.

“Today the conditions were heavier that usual, having the roof on the court before. I’m looking for better things, that’s what I’m going to try to find.,” Nadal added.

This clay season has been extremely tough for Nadal but he is hoping to end it on a high note.

After skipping Monte Carlo and Barcelona because of a rib injury, Nadal played in Madrid and Rome but didn’t win ttiles there.

Nadal usually plays at least three or four clay tournaments leading up to the French Open and arrives to the French Open full of confidence.

“The confidence is high when you win Monte-Carlo, Barcelona, Madrid, Rome. Things are different today. What happened is past, I’m here to try my best. I’m not a big fan of the word ‘if’. How would I be IF I hadn’t ne inured. We don’t know,” Nadal admitted.
