World No. 1 Iga Swiatek has noted that her stunning streak will come to an end one day, and when that happens, she won’t be feeling bad about it.
Swiatek hasn’t had a loss since mid-February as on Thursday she saw off Alison Riske 6-0 6-2 to progress into the French Open third round.
Swiatek got off to an outstanding start to the match as she led 6-0 3-0 after the opening nine games of the match.
In the eighth game of the second – when Riske was serving to stay in the match – Swiatek earned her fifth break of the match to complete a straight-set win in style
“I’m going to reach a point where I’m going to lose a match, and it’s pretty normal. I have been losing matches in tennis for a long time. For sure, the things we are doing right now are pretty extraordinary, but I know in tennis that only one person wins at the end. I will be okay with that. For sure, it’s not fun to lose, but I think it wouldn’t be different than any other loss that I had in my career,” Swiatek said, per the WTA website.
Swiatek progresses, Danielle Collins loses
Collins, who beat Swiatek in the Australian Open semifinal earlier this year, bowed out of the French Open after a surprise loss to Shelby Rogers.
50th-ranked Rogers took out Rogers with a 6-4 6-3 score.
“It’s always good to move through without too much drama … there were little momentum shifts today, but not too much drama,” Rogers told Tennis Channel in victory. “I felt like she started serving a little bit better [from 4-0]. I made a couple of mistakes and felt like my energy dropped a little bit. I made it a point to get some positive self-talk going, jump around a little bit, get myself into the match again.
“She starts so strong and brings the energy from the very first point. If she’s on top of the ball, she can hit a winner from just about anywhere if she wants. I knew I had to counter that today. It was nice to get a quick start in both sets, but holding onto it was a different thing.”
Swiatek plays Danka Kovinic in the French Open third round, while Rogers meets Daria Kasatkina in her next match.
