Polish tennis star Iga Swiatek reveals one of the reasons why she admires Rafael Nadal so much is because the fame and popularity never changed him.
Nadal is one of the greatest players in tennis history but fellow players often describe him as a humble and very nice guy.
Swiatek, 20, grew up idolizing Nadal, and once she became a tennis player, she realized her idol was indeed a great person.
“At first I looked mostly at my older sister, Agata. I would sneak into tennis lessons. I started playing for my father and for her. When I grew up a bit, Rafael Nadal became my great reference. I admire his work ethic and how success hasn’t changed him, he’s still a very nice and humble guy,” Swiatek told Mujerhoy, as quoted on Sportskeeda.
Swiatek praises Paula Badosa
When asked about her relationship with Badosa and Garbine Muguruza, Swiatek revealed she likes them and praised Badosa for her rise.
In late 2021, Badosa won the biggest title of her career in Indian Wells.
Shortly after, Badosa broke into the top-10 for the first time in her career.
“I like them great and I have a great time when I train with them. I know Paula a little better than Garbine, because we have coincided more. Both are very talented, aggressive players with a very strong mentality,” Swiatek said. “What Paula has achieved since last year is incredible: she reached the top 10, won in Indian Wells with a very offensive style, taking the initiative. Also Garbine, who in the WTA Finals in Mexico was sensational, with the audience cheering her and totally delivered. I’m sure the upcoming clashes with the two are going to be very exciting.”
Meanwhile, Swiatek isn’t playing in Madrid.
Swiatek went to Madrid but pulled out of the tournament due to a shoulder issue.
Swiatek is expected to return to action in Rome.
