Garbine Muguruza comments on blowing big lead in French Open first round

2016 French Open champion Garbine Muguruza is confident she will eventually find her best game and be able to once again close out sets and matches.Ā 

On Sunday, Muguruza appeared to be cruising toward a routine straight-set win in her Roland Garros opener.Ā 

What looked like a straight-set win, ended in a three-set defeat for Muguruza as Kaia Kanepi recovered from set and a break down to beat Muguruza 2-6 6-3 6-4.Ā 

Muguruza was 6-2 3-1 up before she suffered a stunning collapse and lost the match in three sets.Ā 

“I’ve had matches so much in control, then I don’t manage to close and it gets complicated. But I feel I’m training hard, playing tournaments, trying to switch those moments, get more confident,” Muguruza told WTA insider.

“I’m 100% sure I’m going to get those wins that are slipping away now.”

Muguruza blew a big lead versus Kanepi

Muguruza had a 6-2 3-1 lead before she lost the next five games and the second set eventually.Ā 

Muguruza faced three consecutive break points in the opening game of the third set but saved them all to avoid going down by an early break in the decider.

Muguruza then had a chance to earn the first break of the third set in the fourth game but missed out on three break points.Ā 

In the ninth game, Kanepi broke Muguruza for a 5-4 lead and served out for the match in the following game.Ā 

One former French champion exited the event but another made the second round as Sloane Stephens beat qualifier Jule Niemeier 5-7 6-4 6-2.Ā 

“It’s tough playing someone who’s played so well to qualify. She hadn’t lost that many games so obviously she was playing well,” Stephens told WTA insider.

“I knew I was just going to have to stick it out and kind of just stay with her, and that’s exactly what I did.ā€Ā
