World No. 5 Stefanos Tsitsipas says he is trying to enjoy himself on the court and adds Monte Carlo is a place where he absolutely loves to play since it’s a tournament with a rich history.
Tsitsipas, 23, arrived to Monte Carlo as the defending champion.
Last year, Tsitsipas put up a stunning run in Monte Carlo to lift his maiden Masters title.
Tsitsipas didn’t drop a single set in Monte Carlo last year.
“I’m trying to enjoy my game as much as I can. As I’ve said to friends and family before, it’s a long year. I’m really focusing on the Race to Turin, not thinking to much about defending [my title here]. I’m more focused on the long run and playing good tennis. I like to play for the people in the stands, their energy. It is a spectacular tournament, rich in history. There are many good things Monaco have offered so far. I enjoy every moment,” Tsitsipas said, per We Love Tennis.
Tsitsipas made a strong start to his title defence
Tsitsipas, seeded at No. 3, had a first round bye in Monte Carlo.
After a first round bye, Tsitsipas defeated Fabio Fognini 6-3 6-0 in his opener at the tournament.
Then, Tsitsipas overcame Laslo Djere 7-5 7-6 (1).
“I knew I had to be alert,” Tsitsipas said in his on-court interview after beating Djere. “He is someone who competes very well on clay. He stays consistent and puts a lot of balls back and I really had to work hard for this win. It was important to get a good dynamic start in the tie-break and stay in rallies and take my chances when they appeared.”
Tsitsipas is more than capable of playing well on clay as it is not a secret that he will try to lift his maiden Grand Slam title at this year’s French Open.
