Former Swiss tennis star Marc Rosset described Iga Swiatek’s recent game and form as “quite monstrous” as he believes the Pole deserves to be ranked at No. 1.
Swiatek, 20, has won her last 19 matches as she claimed victories in Doha, Indian Wells and Miami before leading Poland to a Davis Cup victory over Romania.
“It’s quite monstrous, what she does,” 1992 Barcelona Olympics gold medalist Rosset told RTS.
“I like what she presents.
“I really liked her Roland Garros 2020 when she [won that title].
“She is a player who rarely disappoints.”
Rosset: Swiatek would have reached the No. 1 either way
After Ashleigh Barty announced her shock retirement at the age of 25, Swiatek replaced the Australian at the No. 1 spot.
“I think she would have quickly become world number one even without the retirement of Ash Barty,” Rosset opinioned.
“Of course, the Pole still has things to improve in her game, but I hope now that she can settle permanently at the top.
“Women’s tennis needs a locomotive.
“Swiatek may be the one.”
Swiatek knew she would be the new No. 1 10 days before she officially rose to the No. 1 spot.
When Swiatek officially became the new world No. 1, she gave her thoughts on reaching the huge milestone.
“So, here we are. One day I’m just 100 percent focused on my performance during another match and the next day I’m realizing how to live as No. 1. It’s a lot to take in and I’m working through it day by day at my own pace. It will take some time but on the other hand I’m very excited. There last few weeks were interesting, crazy and hard-core but I’m happy that I was also able to have some quality time in Miami after the final. Now it’s time to get back to work,” Swiatek wrote in a message posted on her Twitter account.
