Former world No. 3 Dominic Thiem has accepted a wildcard into the Estoril Open, the tournament organizers announced on Tuesday.
Thiem, now ranked at No. 51 in the world, is set to make his debut on the clay courts of Estoril as he has no previous appearances at the tournament.
Thiem, a two-time French Open finalist, has just returned from a long injury break.
After being sidelined for 10 month, Thiem made his long-awaited comeback in late March at the Marbella Challenger.
Thiem was scheduled to play in Marrakech last week and in Monte Carlo this week but a positive COVID-19 test ruined his plans.
Thiem didn’t have time to prepare for Monte Carlo
Last Thurday, Thiem finally tested negative for COVID-19 and was allowed to leave quarantine.
Unfortunately, Thiem didn’t have much time to prepare for Monte Carlo so he pulled out of the tournament.
“Hey guys! I hope you’re all well! A short update: I am finally negative and I feel much better,” Thiem announced on Twitter. “Thank you for all your messages! I really appreciate it!
“I’m going to have a medical check-up, so I can get back on track! I wish you all a nice Thursday!”
Thiem, 28, confirmed his goal is to compete again for Grand Slam titles.
“Definitely. If it wasn’t realistic, I would have ended my career already. Because I think when you are used to, or when you know, every tournament or every match you play, no matter who you play, you have the goal to step onto the court to win, to win at every Grand Slam tournament against every opponent, then you want to get there again. That’s the same for me, if that wasn’t the case, tennis wouldn’t make any sense for me anymore. And that’s also my big goal, to get back to that situation where I’ve definitely been. That I can play for the biggest titles and that I can win against anyone in the world,” Thiem told ORF Sport.
