Laura Pigossi overcame a tough fight against defending titlist and top seed, Camila Osorio in the semi-finals to reach the final of the Copa Colsanitas on Saturday. The Brazilian won 7-5, 7-6(2) after more than two hours of play.
Although the match was closely fought, the Colombian was clearly hampered throughout the proceedings with her back and leg acting up, requiring her to call for medical assistance in both sets. In the second set, she clawed back from 3-5 down and saved four match points before succumbing in the tie-break eventually. In terms of points won, Osorio won only 20% of her second-serve points to Pigossi’s 40%. Both players traded breaks throughout the match with the Brazilian finishing with one more break of serve than the Colombian’s six.
Copa Colsanitas: Laura Pigossi and Tatjana Maria to write a new tale in the finale
Pigossi’s opponent in the final will be Tatjana Maria. The German’s win over Kamilla Rakhimova in their semi-final was quite one-sided which she won 6-2, 6-2 in 82 minutes.
Maria won 70% of her first-serve points to Rakhimova’s 50% and 63% of her second-serve points to the latter’s 46%. Although Maria did fail to save the lone break point, she faced, she also converted five of the 11 break points she had on Rakhimova’s serve.
Following Laura Pigossi and Tatjana Maria’s reaching the final, the Copa Colsanitas final will have two players who came through the qualifying draw fight it out for the title. The last time two players who’d qualified for the main draw played the final was at the 2021 Lyon International where Clara Tauson and Viktorija Golubic clashed in the title round. This is the first time that Pigossi’s reached the final of a WTA event while for Maria, it’s her second final. This is also the first time that the two will be playing against each other.
