No. 10 seed Belinda Bencic said she was happy with way she played and fought after upsetting Paula Badosa in the Charleston quarterfinal.
Bencic, ranked at No. 21 in the world, recovered from a set down to beat No. 2 seed Badosa 2-6 7-6 (2) 6-4.
It was the fourth meeting between the two and Bencic’s first win over Badosa.
“It was a big fight,” Bencic said after the match, per the WTA Tour website. “I’m just going to try to recover. But I’m happy with the way I played, with the way I fought, and I’m happy to get another match here.”
Bencic recovered from a set and a break down to beat Badosa
Badosa pressed Bencic right from the start but the Swiss managed to save three consecutive break points in the opening game.
However, it didn’t take long for Badosa to claim the first break of the match as she broke Bencic in the third game to take a 2-1 lead in the first set.
Badosa then collected her second break in the seventh game, before routinely serving out for the first set in the eighth game.
Badosa had a chance to start the second set with an early break but Bencic saved two break points in the opening game to avoid going down by an early break in the second set.
However, Badosa kept pressing Bencic and earned the first break of the second set in the fifth game to take a 6-2 3-2 lead.
Bencic refused to quit after going down by a set and a break as she broke back Badosa in the eighth game to level the second set to four games apiece.
Badosa had a good chance to break Bencic again but missed out on two consecutive break points in the 11th game as the Swiss managed to force a tie-break.
After recovering from a break down and saving two break points in the 11th game, Bencic dominated the tie-break to force a decider.
Bencic then made a good start to the third set, taking an early 2-0 lead.
Bencic got broken back in the sixth game but broke Badosa again in the seventh game and held on to her serve the rest of the way to complete a comeback win.
